Sewing Trumpet — Bianca Lugmayr with Alex Kranabetter

Kollektiv Bregenz
14.04.2022

Sound-image performance
Trumpet, effects unit, sewing machine

Alexander Kranabetter leaves the boundaries of conventional trumpet playing behind and creates music between free improvisation and electro-acoustic sound art. What begins as a fragile miniature quickly develops its own organic dynamic and has a mesmerising pull. Fleeting melodies, dark loops, drones and bumpy beats that lead through empty echo chambers outline the sound architecture.

This results in multi-layered, introspective pieces that transcend formal restrictions. In interaction with Bianca Lugmayr's sewing machine, audio-visual sound experiments are created that develop their own mystical atmosphere, disturbingly raw and sensually delicate.

Fat Border

Zollart, Koblach
14.4.- 9.6.2024

“fat border” is a reference to Erwin Wurm's “fat house” – part of his famous “fat sculptures” – which humorously criticize consumer society and petty-bourgeois status symbols.

The joys of cross-border shopping exemplified by the Vorarlberg/Switzerland border (Koblach/Montlingen). “Border and value” are the subjects with which Bianca Lugmayr wants to draw attention. The artist covers all the shop windows of the former customs house with a textile, swollen, “fat” staging and thus reverses the task of the shop window, of “looking in” into a “flowing out”. Out of abundance.

The artist remains true to herself in her choice of material by using textiles as the supporting element. In this wall installation, the artist uses dark red velvet, a heavy, opulent material that refers to the boundless, limitless, fat consumer society and, in terms of color, to the markings on the border barrier.

This padded “puffiness” gives the installation an object-like and noble appearance. The border is symbolically referred to several times. The border between interior and exterior space, borderless, invisible border (EU-wide travel, Schengen Agreement), emotional and national borders, border consumption, the value of a person, the value of income in relation to a border and the country in which one is born. Using a motion detector, a short audio file is played, which is cut together from supermarket recordings, coin noises and the recorded words of the musician Nina Lyne Gangl.

Temporary Installation
Nails, transparent linen, textile dye, dispersion paint

The work visual audio track I, which emerged from the performance "sewn trumpet" at kollektiv.raum, was the starting point for this installation. With the help of a projector, the graphic lines were nailed into the wall by the artist and traced with torn, coloured transparent linen.

Bianca Lugmayr delves deeply into language, materiality, and abstraction in her work. Her signature is the fast, freely sewn line that represents liberation from perfectionism, raw beauty, and the value of Imperfection.
